Statement of the Problem: Six Worked Examples for an Indian Dissertation, by Discipline (2026)

A statement of the problem is a paragraph, not a topic. Most rejected Chapter 1 drafts in Indian departments fail on exactly that point: the scholar has named an area, and the committee wanted a written argument that something specific is wrong, unknown or unresolved in a defined setting, and that not knowing it costs something.

This guide is a bank of six statements written out in full, one each for an M.Ed dissertation, an MBA dissertation, an M.Sc Nursing thesis, an M.Tech dissertation, an M.A. Economics dissertation and an LL.M. dissertation. Each one uses Indian degree names, Indian settings and data sources an Indian scholar can actually reach. Read the one closest to your discipline, then read the funnel beneath it, which is the same in all six.

How to read the specimens. Every square bracket marks a place where a real citation, a real figure or a real setting belongs. The specimens are shapes, not claims: no study, statistic or finding in them is attributed to any real author, and none should be copied into a dissertation without being replaced by evidence you have read. That is the honest form for a worked-example bank, and it is also what protects you in the viva.

The four moves that produce a statement of the problem

Whatever the discipline, a problem statement that survives the doctoral committee is doing four things in sequence, and it is usually one paragraph to one page.

The same four moves, walked through step by step before you read the specimens.
  1. The settled ground. One or two sentences on what is already established and is not in dispute. This is where your citations sit.
  2. The disturbance. The specific thing that is wrong, unknown, inconsistent or changed — stated as a fact about a defined population, place or period, not as a general lament.
  3. The gap, named as a gap. What has not been studied, and where. In Indian dissertations this is almost always a setting gap, a population gap or a period gap, and saying which one it is makes the sentence defensible.
  4. The cost of not knowing. Who makes a worse decision because the answer is missing. This is the sentence that converts a curiosity into a problem.

Indian departments commonly prescribe Kothari’s Research Methodology: Methods and Techniques or Ranjit Kumar’s Research Methodology as the methods text, and both treat problem definition as the step that constrains everything after it. That is the practical test to apply to your own draft: if changing your problem statement would not change your method, the statement is not yet doing any work.

Four moves, narrowing: settled ground, disturbance, gap, cost.

1. M.Ed dissertation, education

Competency-based assessment has been established in Indian school education policy as the preferred alternative to rote testing, and research on its classroom effects in [country / state context] reports gains in higher-order performance when teachers are trained in item construction [cite]. What is less settled is whether teachers who have not received that training can implement it at all. In [district], government secondary schools adopted competency-based formative assessment from the [year] academic session, but the in-service training that accompanied the change was delivered in a single orientation of [duration], and no study has examined what teachers in these schools are actually doing in the classroom since.

The available Indian research on competency-based assessment concentrates on urban private schools and on student outcomes rather than on teacher practice, and studies located in government secondary schools in [state] are absent from the literature reviewed for this dissertation. The result is that the district education office is extending the model to further blocks without evidence on whether teachers can construct competency-based items, how they interpret the descriptors, or what support they say they need.

The present study therefore examines the classroom assessment practices of secondary school teachers in government schools of [district] following the adoption of competency-based formative assessment, and identifies the difficulties they report in implementing it.

Why it works. The disturbance is dated and located. The gap is named as a setting gap and a population gap, not as “little research exists”. And the cost falls on an identifiable decision-maker, the district education office, which is what makes the study worth a year of a scholar’s life. If your tool for measuring that practice is the next question, our guide to choosing a standardised tool for an M.Ed dissertation takes it from here.

2. MBA dissertation, management

Customer retention in Indian retail banking is understood to depend more on service quality and perceived fairness than on price [cite], and the migration of routine transactions to mobile channels has been documented across the sector [cite]. What that literature does not settle is what happens to the branch relationship once the transactions leave it. In [bank / category of banks] operating in [city], branch footfall for routine transactions has fallen since [year], while the branch network and its staffing have not changed.

Branch managers are now evaluated on cross-selling and relationship depth using measures designed when customers visited monthly. No study located for this dissertation examines how customers who have shifted to digital channels perceive service quality at a branch they rarely enter, and the Indian studies available measure service quality among branch-visiting customers only, which selects out exactly the population of interest.

This study therefore measures perceived service quality and its relationship with retention intention among digitally active retail banking customers in [city], and compares it with the same measures among customers who continue to transact at the branch.

Why it works. It names a selection problem in the existing literature, which is a stronger gap than absence, and it ties the finding to a decision a named role has to make. If your guide has asked you to turn this into a diagram with arrows, that step is in our guide to building a conceptual framework for an MBA dissertation.

3. M.Sc Nursing thesis

Structured teaching programmes are an established nursing intervention for improving caregiver knowledge and practice, and their effect on knowledge scores is consistently reported across Indian settings [cite]. Knowledge, however, is not practice. Among caregivers of [patient group] discharged from [type of hospital] in [city], readmission for [complication] has been recorded at [rate, with source], and the discharge counselling provided is delivered verbally, once, on the day of discharge, without a written protocol.

Indian studies of structured teaching programmes for this patient group measure knowledge immediately after the intervention and rarely at follow-up, so it is not known whether any change persists to the point at which the complication actually occurs. Nor has the practice of the caregiver at home been observed in this setting.

The present study therefore assesses the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge and reported home-care practice among caregivers of [patient group] at [setting], with measurement immediately after the intervention and at [interval] follow-up.

Why it works. It draws the knowledge-versus-practice distinction explicitly, which is the single most common objection to a nursing problem statement, and it builds the follow-up interval into the problem rather than leaving it to the method. The hypotheses and variables that follow from a statement of this shape are set out in our guide to hypotheses and variables in an M.Sc Nursing thesis.

4. M.Tech dissertation, civil and environmental engineering

Design procedures for [structure or system] assume [design condition], and the behaviour of the system under that assumption is well characterised in the literature [cite]. In [city or corridor], the operating condition departs from that assumption: [measured departure, with source and period]. Municipal design practice in the region nonetheless continues to apply the standard procedure, because no local characterisation of the departure exists.

Published Indian work on this problem is concentrated in [other region or climate zone], where the governing parameter differs materially, so the coefficients reported there cannot be transferred without verification. No monitoring study for [city] covering [period] has been reported.

This dissertation therefore characterises [parameter] for [system] at [site] over [period] using [instrument or dataset], and evaluates the performance of the standard design procedure against the measured behaviour.

Why it works. Engineering committees want the transferability question answered explicitly: why the coefficients from another region will not do. That single move is what turns a replication into a contribution. Where the data behind it comes from, and which custodians publish it, is covered in our guide to official data sources for an Indian thesis by discipline.

5. M.A. Economics dissertation

The relationship between [policy instrument] and [outcome] at the aggregate level has been examined for India using national series [cite], and the direction of the relationship is not in dispute. The aggregate result conceals heterogeneity across states, and the mechanism proposed in the literature operates through [channel], which is measured at the state level or not at all.

Studies using state-level panels for India end at [year] or exclude [category of states], and the change in [instrument] introduced in [year] therefore falls outside every published estimation window located for this dissertation. As a result, it is not known whether the aggregate relationship holds after the change, or whether it is driven by a subset of states.

This dissertation therefore estimates the relationship between [instrument] and [outcome] using a state-level panel for [period], constructed from [named official series], and tests whether the relationship differs across [state grouping].

Why it works. The gap is a period gap and a coverage gap, both of which are checkable by an examiner in five minutes, which is exactly why they are safe to claim. The named official series does the rest: it tells the committee the study is feasible before they ask. Which series are available and what each one actually measures is in our comparison of data sources for an M.A. Economics dissertation in India.

6. LL.M. dissertation, doctrinal

[Statute, year (Act number)] establishes [mechanism], and the provision has been interpreted by the [court] in [named line of cases, with citations] as [settled proposition]. A separate line of reasoning has since developed in [other courts or later benches] on [related question], and the two lines proceed on inconsistent premises about [concept].

The inconsistency has not been addressed by the [apex court] and has not been analysed in the Indian legal literature reviewed for this dissertation, which treats the two lines separately. Practitioners and lower courts applying the provision therefore have no principled basis for choosing between them, and outcomes in [category of matters] vary accordingly.

This dissertation therefore analyses the judicial reasoning in both lines of authority, identifies the point at which the premises diverge, and evaluates which construction is consistent with the statutory scheme and with [constitutional provision or principle].

Why it works. A doctrinal problem is a conflict or a silence in the law itself, not a social problem. This one names the conflict, names who bears it, and commits to a normative conclusion, which is what separates an LL.M. dissertation from a case digest. The chapter architecture it implies is in our guide to structuring an LL.M. dissertation in India, and the citation forms are in our guide to citing Indian Acts and judgments in a thesis.

A fill-in template

Write these five sentences, in this order, and then cut. Nothing else belongs in the paragraph.

Sentence 1 (settled ground). It is established that [proposition] in [context] [cite].

Sentence 2 (disturbance). In [specific setting], however, [measurable departure or change] since [date / event].

Sentence 3 (gap). The available research on [topic] is located in [other setting / other population / earlier period], and no study of [your setting and population] has been reported.

Sentence 4 (cost). As a result, [named decision-maker] is [deciding / continuing / extending] without evidence on [the missing thing].

Sentence 5 (commitment). The present study therefore [verb] [construct] among [population] at [setting] using [approach].

Sentence 5 is a promise. Every objective, every instrument and every chapter afterwards has to keep it. Turning it into objectives your methodology can actually deliver is the next step, and our guide to writing a PhD synopsis for the doctoral committee sets out how the two are checked against each other.

Five objections that send the section back

  1. “This is a topic, not a problem.” The draft names an area and never states that anything is wrong or unknown. Fix: write sentence 2 first, then build outwards.
  2. “Where is the gap?” The draft says research is “limited” or “scanty”. Fix: name the gap as a setting, population or period gap, and say what the existing work actually covers.
  3. “Who cares about this?” Sentence 4 is missing. A problem without a decision-maker is a curiosity.
  4. “Your method cannot answer this.” Sentence 5 promises something the design cannot deliver — usually a causal claim from a cross-sectional survey. Fix the verb or fix the design.
  5. “This is your literature review.” The statement has grown to three pages of citations. The problem statement is a paragraph to a page; the review comes later and does the arguing.

If yours has already come back, the recovery sequence is set out in our guide to fixing a synopsis rejected by the doctoral committee.

Writing the paragraph that the rest of the document has to keep

The statement of the problem is short, which is why it is written last and badly. Draft it early instead, and hold it beside every chapter you write: if the chapter does not serve one of those five sentences, it belongs somewhere else. Tesify keeps your problem statement, objectives and chapter structure visible together as you draft, so the document stays consistent with the promise you made in Chapter 1.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a statement of the problem be?

One paragraph to one page in most Indian dissertations. Longer than that and it has turned into a literature review, which is a separate section that is assessed separately.

What is the difference between the problem statement and the research gap?

The gap is one move inside the problem statement. The gap says what has not been studied; the problem statement adds what is wrong in the setting and what it costs not to know, which is what makes the gap worth filling.

Does the statement of the problem need citations?

Yes, in the settled-ground sentence and wherever you assert what existing research covers. A claim that no study exists is a claim about the literature and has to be supported by describing the search you ran.

Where does it go in the dissertation?

In Chapter 1, after the introduction and before the objectives, in most Indian formats. In a synopsis it sits in the same position, usually in a single paragraph.

Can I write the problem statement before the literature review?

Draft it first and rewrite it after. You cannot state a gap you have not searched for, but you also cannot search efficiently without a provisional problem to search against.

Is it acceptable to say “very little research has been done”?

Not on its own. Committees read it as a sentence the scholar has not checked. Say instead what the existing research does cover, and let the omission be visible.

Should the problem statement mention my method?

Only in the final commitment sentence, and only at the level of approach. The detailed design belongs in the methodology chapter, not here.

How do I state a problem for a doctrinal law dissertation?

As a conflict, ambiguity or silence in the legal materials themselves, with the provision and the lines of authority named. A social problem is not a doctrinal problem unless the law is what is unresolved.

My topic is very new and there is no Indian literature at all. What then?

Say so precisely, describe what related literature exists in adjacent settings, and explain why it cannot be transferred. An honest absence, evidenced by your search, is a stronger gap than a vague one.

Does the problem statement change after the committee approves it?

It can be refined, and refinements are normally welcome, but a change that alters what the study promises to deliver usually needs to go back to the committee. Keep the approved version beside your draft.

Can I use one of these specimens in my dissertation?

Use the shape, not the sentences. Every bracket in them marks something only you can supply, and the specimens deliberately contain no real studies, figures or findings precisely so that they cannot be submitted as they stand.
